Mini Projectors in the City: Its Going to be Big…

A couple of days ago we posted about the company easyweb using high end ‘geoaware‘ projectors to beam images onto architecture in the city. While not on the same scale a new trend is emerging using mini projectors to display images while on the move around the urban scene – after all the city is a canvas there to be used.

The movie below was produced by a employee of Microvision who ‘borrows’ the companies up and coming pico projector to post on his excellent blog ‘the pico underground‘.

We like this a lot but if you have ever got annoyed with people playing their music on the bus via phones with built in speakers, within the next 18 months phones will have built in projectors and music on the bus will be upgraded to movies on the streets.

To be honest we are quite looking forward to it, it could certainly liven up the cityscape at night…

I’m looking forward to it too! I’m taking my 3M mini projector and Ipod touch and mini DV cam to India on a three week environmental/musical goodwill ambassador tour with Solar Punch and the India Youth Climate Network this tuesday and then to the slums of Cairo Egypt at the end of February. What our group in Solar CITIES ( is uses the urban fabric of different countries to transfer knowledge and technology. We will video tape the construction of urban domestic rooftop biogas generators (that use city garbage to produce cooking and heating fuel at the household level) and then use the microprojector to play it on the walls in the shantytowns in Cairo to show crowds of stakeholders how to replicate the technology in their own homes. It is a combination of Augusto Boal’s street theater education and urban sustainable development work made possible by these great gadgets. Happy to see that you at digital urban (our favorite website, from whom we learned how to use Blender and Elder Scrolls Construction Set to create 3D Cairo landscapes with solar heaters on it!) are into this too! Cheers and keep up the great writing!

I’d like to know how much energy these things are going to consume.
