Professor Andrew Hudson-Smith holds a Chair in Digital Urban Systems at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) at University College London. He served as Director for 8 years, establishing 3 MSc Courses and leading the way in Smart Cities, Urban Modelling, the Internet of Things, and Geo-Spatial Systems. At the new UCL East Campus, he served as Deputy Director, playing a core role in founding the UCL East Curriculum and being central to the development of the One Pool Street Building. He is Editor-in-Chief of Future Internet Journal, Founding Editor of the Urban Planning Journal, an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, The Academy of Social Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He is also the course founder of the MRes in Advanced Spatial Analysis and Visualisation, the MSc in Smart Cities and Urban Analytics and the MSc in Connected Environments. He is currently jointly heading the Connected Environments Lab at UCL East, alongside three professors and three lecturers, with a new focus on Real-Time Data and the Future of living through ‘Digital Habitation’ using augmented and virtual reality.

He has over 200 publications with a focus on society and its use, understanding and application of digital technologies. His work has been widely viewed on Sky Television, The New York Times, The Guardian and most recently, The One Show (BBC), Channel 4 News, New Scientist, Wired, ABC Australia, The Japan Times, BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 5 as part of a wider public understanding of science. His book ‘Cities in the Metaverse: Spatial Computing, Digital Twins, Avatars, Economics and Digital Habitation on the New Frontier’ was published by Routledge in late 2025. He is currently writing a book entitled ‘Digital Cities of Tomorrow’ for Springer/Nature, to be published in 2026. His third book, ‘Digital Urban’ is planned for 2027.

The blog aims to cover everything relating to sensing, mapping and visualising digital technologies in urban environments, with a view towards smart cities, smart places, IoT and urban technology.
