Paper 3D Printer: Low Cost 3D Architectural Models

By 3D Printing, Architectural Visualisation

The great promise of 3D printing for architecture and city design has begun to fade recently, mainly due to the price of the print media. Rather than becoming the ultimate tool for decision making in design they have been restricted to marketing models often brought out at trade shows.

Step forward the latest innovation from Mcor Technologies, a 3D printer that uses plain old A4 paper as its media. The use of standard A4 paper, of the type currently sat in your laser printer, dramatically cuts the cost of production, the house above comes in at around £1.

Models have a ‘wood like’ feel to them and as such the system seems almost perfect for ‘planning for real’ exercises, public consultation and printing from system such as ArcScene, 3D Max or SketchUp.

No word on the price of the actual printer yet however… take a look at Mcor Technologies for more information.

Particles in the City: Agents For Understanding Flow and City Dynamics

By 3D Agents, 3dmax, Agent Based Modelling, Air Pollution London, Particles

We thought we would put up a quick post on ‘what we are currently doing’… At the moment we are looking into simulating and visualising flow in the city, linked into our earlier 3D based agent work. Its early days but using a particle system linked to known wind dynamics and a 3D city model you can create a rapid visualisation of the dispersion of particles. This maybe useful if, for example, a ‘dirty bomb’ was exploded or if some sort of contamination was detected.

Taking this further it can also be used for crowd modelling and pedestrian evacuation analysis within the cityscape. We are using our ‘fantasy city’ as a first test bed, rather than our London model at the moment as its easier to work with in the first stage of development…

You can see how we created the model via our Fantasy City Tutorial for 3D Studio Max.

Digital Pen: Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop – On Site Digitising

By ArcGIS Explorer, digital pen, Digitise

Here at digital urban we do have a tendency to track down the latest gadget, all in the name of research of course. As such the Capturx digital pen for ArcGIS has caught our eye. Using the digital pen you can simply print out a map from ArcGIS, draw features on it using the pen and when you sync all your features are geo-referenced and integrated into your digital map.

Capturx for ArcGIS can be used with any ArcGIS Desktop licenses, including ArcView®, ArcEditor™, or ArcInfo®, and is compatible with geodatabase feature classes, such as personal and enterprise ArcSDE®.

Take a look at adapx.com for more info.

We will have more on the digital pen soon as we can get hold of one to try out..
