By Sky Ceiling

Sitting in a slightly gloomy basement the movie below caught our eye:

Sky Factory have just launched Sky V a virtual skylight using a multi-channel graphics processor and specialized synchronization software for display of proprietary HD content. In essence SkyV simulates a real skylight, presenting hours of visual content captured from beneath beautiful skies and trees world-wide.

Applications include: hospitality (casinos, restaurants, hotel lobbies), healthcare (radiology suites, waiting and treatment areas), corporate (board rooms, offices and conference rooms) and residential (dining, home theater and bedroom).

No details on pricing but i guess if you have to ask its not a good sign…

Take a look at http://www.theskyfactory.com/index.php for full details.

Google Map Maker Timelapse

By Google Map Maker, google maps, Timelapse Maps

Google Map Maker is a Google Maps service that allows users to add or edit features, such as roads, businesses, parks, schools and more. It is a classic Web 2.0 methodology to map the regions of the world that are not already covered by the Google Maps and we kind of like it.

The timelapse video below illustrates Madurai, India being mapped:

Only certain regions of the world are available to edit/map, for obvious reaons, a complete list of areas can be found on the Map Maker site.

The next video details Nicosia, Cyprus:

Google explains the concept of Map Maker below:

Its quick, easy, moderated and provides a publicly viewable basemap in areas where mapping maybe limited. If you are logging in from a part of the world not covered by Google Maps then Google Map Maker is well worth a look…

Atlas of Cyberspace: Now Available as a Free Download

By Atlas of Cyberspace, mapping

Martin Dodge and Rob Kithen’s seminal book ‘The Atlas of Cyberspace’, is now available as a free download. The book was arguably the first mass market publication exploring the spatial and visual nature of cyberspace and its infrastructure.

It uses a user-friendly, approachable style to examine why cyberspace is being mapped and what new cartographic and visualisation techniques have been employed.

Richly illustrated with over 300 full colour images, it comprehensively catalogues 30 years worth of maps that reveal the rich and varied landscapes of cyberspace.

The book includes chapters detailing:

– mapping Internet infrastructure and traffic flows
– mapping the Web
– mapping online conversation and community
– imagining cyberspace in art, literature, and film

Martin is a CASA Alumni and as such the book captures a moment of CASA’s research back in the mid 90’s. Look out for the ’30 Days in ActiveWorlds Map’ (thats ours… 🙂 )
