Virtual Stonehenge: A LiDAR Survey Flythrough

By LiDAR, Stonehenge

A Virtual Stonehenge Landscape from Wessex Archaeology on Vimeo.

Its not urban but is so nice that its worth making an exception to look at the results of a LiDAR survey around the area of Stonehenge.Prehistoric burial mounds (barrows), the great Cursus (a 2km Neolithic monument), the Bronze Age Avenue which links Stonehenge to the River Avon, and other henges such as Woodhenge and Durrington Walls are all clearly visible.

The movie was produced by Tom Goskar from Wessex Archaeology

To find out more technical information about the survey, visit the Stonehenge LiDAR section of the English Heritage website.

See Tom’s blog entry for more information.

Who is Amung Us: Live Geo Stats

By Mapping Visitors, Stats, Who is Amung Us

This is quite interesting, a map you can embed into your page that updates live with the geo-location of readers.

Developed by http://maps.amung.us/ the map is easy to set up and only requires a simple piece of code to cut and paste, we have a test map running below, you should be able to see your location if your reading this:

You can also customise the map so it produces a heat map of visitors (it will take a few hours after this post to see the results):

Take a look at http://maps.amung.us/ for more details.

Geography in Second Life: Neogeography from digitalurban on Vimeo.

The movie above is a 3 minute clip of our work to date in Second Life. We have been working on Second Nature Island on land kindly donated by the Nature Publishing Group to explore how ‘classic geography and cities’ can be imported into Second Life. A high definition version can be viewed via Vimeo by clicking on the HD link in the movie player.

Music is by the Tartan Rascals

See Nature.com for more information on our work and other ‘scientists’ working in Second Life.

As ever any thoughts, comments or questions are welcome…
