Synthetic Space Visualisation

By Architectural Visualisation

Visualising architecture and space does not always have to to be the normal street based flythroughs with nice renders. Commercial companies for obvious reasons do not always have the time to spend developing abstract visualisations which is why its sometimes refreshing to take a look at up and coming visualisers before they get tied into coporate life.

Rammy Elsaadany is a student on Graduate Diploma in Architecture at the Barlett, University College London. Using a mix of 3D max and After Effects he has produced the following visualisation entitled ‘Synthetic Space’.

Rammy states that ‘Synthetic space is a journey through different ways of reading a generic city. The information stored in reading the city subsequently manifests itself as a new form of architecture’.

Interestingly the city makes use of the ‘Greeble’ plugin – part two of that tutorial is on this afternoon’s list of things to do…

It is worth checking out Rammy’s Parallel Realities short film on YouTube as well.

Import Any Model into Second Life: AC3D

By 3D Modelling, Importing into Second Life, Second Earth

Importing models into Second Life is still for various reasons a difficult task – the people from http://www.inivis.com/ however have just made it a whole lot easier with their plugin for AC3D.

There are three ways to import from AC3D into Second Life:

1) Sculpted prim maker

AC3D’s Sculpted Prim exporter is one of the best ways to create smooth sculpties for Second Life.

Using AC3D’s popular and easy to use interface, you can create objects for Second Life quickly and without many of the restrictions that other 3D modelers enforce.

2) Box builder

Planning a new vehicle, building or piece of furniture?

Simply create your model in AC3D then watch your creation assemble inside Second Life.

3) Upload ANY polygon model in Second Life

Want to show someone what you made in AC3D, or discuss a CAD design inside Second Life?

Our Second Life Triangle Builder lets you upload virtually ANY 3D model inside Second Life.

The movie below details the Second Life Triangle Builder:

Sure using Triangles is object intensive but it works and it works well (our previous maps in Second Life were created using our own triangle builder).

If you have the space and it fits into the maximum object limit then this really does open up object import into Second Life.

You can helpfully try AC3D free for 14 days so grab a trail, install the plugins and start importing those models into Second Life…

Forthcoming Tutorial: The Rendered City

By Posts

Have you ever read a book on architectural visualisation or 3D modelling and still been left in the dark about how to create all the stunning images featured inside? Maybe its just us but we are often left frustrated with books/tutorials that don’t quite live up to the hype.

As such we are thinking about putting together a new series of posts looking at creating and rendering your own city, complete with lighting and overview textures. Modelling a city in packages such as 3D max can seem like a daunting task but with the right steps images such as the one above and below can be achieved from scratch in just a few hours.

Our second part of ‘Greebling a City‘ will go online soon with the Crysis tutorial frustratingly moved to next week due to frequent crashes with their new SDK.

Next week we have news of how to get hold of our booklet – Digital Geography: Geographic Visualisation for Urban Environments – which acts as an overview of the latest work via the blog along with a number of tutorials on how to create panoramas, google maps and visualisation in google earth.

The full book on Digital Urban will be available in the summer, if you have a tutorial you would like to see either on the blog or in the book, do let us know via the comment box below.

Urban Design Visualisation with Blender

By 3D Modelling, Blender

Blender for those that don’t know is a free and open source 3D modelling package. While not quite as powerful as some other major software packages such as Lightwave, 3D-Studio Max, and XSI it is still extremely competent and more importantly free.

Yorik has written up an urban design visualisation project using Blender, his write up is especially nice as it looks into not only the modelling but also the ‘sauce’ as he calls it – the living things in the scene such as people and cars.

The video below provides a sample of the output:

It is well worth taking a look at Yoriks Guide to Urban Design with Blender.
