Architectural Visualisation: SoftMirage Demo Reel

By Architectural Visualisation, Demo Reels

Continuing our series on Demo Reels we feature work by SoftMirage, a visual communications company located in Orange County.

Founded in 1997, SoftMirage produces high quality work with the aim to remain at the edge of technological advances. Their services range from 3D computer animation to corporate identity to website design.

SoftMirage’s Demo Reel is embedded below:

The Reel is well paced and impressive, find out more from http://www.softmirage.com/ – their Portfolio is especially worth a look for the 3D renders.

California High Speed Rail Visualisation

By Architectural Visualisation, Transport Visualisation

We first featured Newlands and Company with their visualistion of retail space in Portland, Oregon. Specializing in transportation, architecture and urban design projects embedded below are two movies detailing the proposed California High Speed Rail System.

In all, the 240 acres of undeveloped land in downtown Sacramento are being transformed into a master-planned, mixed-use development that will become a hub for trains, buses and light rail:

The second movie details a conceptual view of how high speed rail would operate inside of San Francisco’s Transbay Terminal. The end of the clip is our favorite illustrating how the area surrounding the terminal would be impacted by the 13 towers currently proposed for sites surrounding the new station:

Prototype: Modelling New York 2

By Cities in Games, prototype

In a second post on Prototype – a forthcoming game from Radical Entertainment – we feature an interesting insight into their modelling of New York.

The movie below provides various concept drawings and views of the model imported into the game:

Its interesting how well New York has been recreated for the game, although to be honest the last section of the video was slightly cringe worthy on delivering a product.

The game is scheduled for release on PC, PS3 and XBox 360 in 2008 – date yet to be confirmed.

See http://www.prototypegame.org for more screen shots and videos.

Thanks to Ian for posting a comment letting us know of the new video…

3D Churches: Modelling the Architecture

By Architectural Visualisation, Google Earth, SketchUp

We are not sure why but we have a ‘thing’ about 3D models of churches. We think its down to the unique architecture but there is something about models of cathedrals and churches that is often awe inspiring.

Rollothecats
model of a church exterior built using SketchUp is exquisite:

The work load invlolved in such models is high, our movie below of St John’s Church in Newham, London took a week to model:

Featured above the church is embedded into Google Earth at the moment we are trying to import it into Crysis – we should have an update on this in the next day or so.

Of course one of the quickest ways to capture the architecture of a church is using panoramas and then rendering direct in 3D Max or any 3D package as one of our earliest YouTube movies below illustrates:

Finally, The Jubilee Church designed by Richard Meier in Rome is one such example, although a modern day take on religious space it is without question magnificent.

Robert Angelis created a 3D model of the church as part of his degree thesis, taking 2 months to render the animation is one to sit back and watch, the quality speaks for itself:

There is something about modelling a church and then being able to fly around it that is both captivating and fascinating but then again as we say perhaps its just us?
