Denver in Virtual Earth

By 3D City, Virtual Earth

As reported in our previous post on Virtual Earth a number of new 3D cities have been included in the latest update. In this post we feature a movie of Denver – created as an illustration of our tutorial on creating engaging movies from Google and Virtual Earth:

Music by Denny Schneidemesser (well worth a click)

The model is as impressive as ever with the Virtual Earth system, if Virtual Earth was made a stand alone application for Mac and Pc then Google Earth would have a run for its money.

We are getting used to using the helicopter background sound effect and the soundtrack by Denny fits the flightpath to such an extent that it would be nice to have a plugin that automatically played music/helicopter sounds while navigating in Virtual or Google Earth.

The non YouTubed movie can be viewed from here (720×576, 34Mb, .wmv)

Chicago in Virtual Earth

By Virtual Earth

Microsoft continues to roll out its 3D cities to very little coverage in the blog sphere. As we have said before if this was Google their would be movies, news items, favoite views up within hours of release.

This current release includes, amoungst others, Chicago which is rendered in the level of detail we are coming to expect from Virtual Earth. Embedded below is a movie created by the guys at virtualearth.spaces.live.com, a site that provides the latest news on Virtual Earth:

Video: Chicago Landmarks

The movie was made using the XBox 360 controller which seems to provides a nice smooth way of navigation. Of note is their kind mention of our tutorial on how to create movies from both Google and Virtual Earth, we quite like the KLF esk music as well..

We will take a look at some of the other cities released as soon as we get a chance…

Get Google Maps.app on your Ipod Touch

By Gadgets, google maps, Ipod Touch

In essence the only plus points about the IPod Touch are the extra memory (if you go for the 16Gb option) and not having to sign up to a new phone contract, compared to the IPhone.

The minus points are many with various niggles about lack of a volume control on the unit meaning having to remove the Ipod from your pocket and touch twice/swipe everytime you want to skip a track or change the volume. Engadget have just put up their thoughts and we have to say that we agree with most of their views.

In addition to these points are the lack of applications compared to the IPhone, notably in our view the Google Maps App. However, as the IPhone and the IPod Touch run the same operating system the apps seem to be interchangeable as long as you can find a way to transfer them.

We don’t recommend this due to issues of warranty and copyright but HackTheIpodTouch.com are reporting the ability to transfer Maps.app to the Ipod Touch. No word on levels of success yet but if you want to fill up your Ipod Touch screen with all those missing apps we are betting the chance is only a few weeks away.

With it of course comes a void warranty and risk of legal action etc etc….

For those interested our Ipod Touch is going back to the Apple Store in Regent Street, London, next week as its screen is shockingly bad for playing video, see Apple Touch for more info.
