Abstract Architecture: 3D Visual Data Representation

By Second Life

A YouTube member known as lhetherington has uploaded an interesting movie based around the concept of abstract reconstruction of recorded information.

Paraphrasing lhetherington’s introduction – instead of a traditional 3D flythrough movie he/she decided to use a 3D environment (Secondlife) for presenting the artwork based on data collected from the Torpoint Ferry (Plymouth, UK). This is a 3D abstract data representation displayed in a virtual gallery with the experience of being inside the 3D model.

Physical data has been transformed in to a three-dimensional architectural visualisation, effectively mapping the information as a virtual entity.

For more info take a look at http://www.lhetherington.com

We will be running a feature on using panoramic imagery in Second Life hopefully next week..

SketchUp 3D Campus Winners

By SketchUp

The University Campus competition via SketchUp has produced some excellent building models in Google Earth. Frank over at the Google Earth Blog has made a movie flying into each of the winning entries.

Frank has kindly allowed us to embed his movie below:

Music by The Tartan Rascals who have featured recently in a number of our posts – its well worth clicking on the link to check out their other free tracks.

The movie below – detailing our first experimental build in Second Life uses the same track by way of comparison:

3D London Underground Image

By 3D London Tube Map, 3D Modelling, London Underground

Readers maybe aware of our on-going work to build a 3D map of the London Tube network. Depth information is hard to come by due to issues of security therefore the work has concentrated on creating a 3D geographic location map.

Aimed at creating a ‘plasticine‘ look to the routes the interactive image below illustrates a work in progress produced so we can easily identify the errors. Double click to zoom in and drag to pan:

The final cleaned up version will be online shortly.

You can also view the image full screen (recommended).

Thanks go to Simon Clarke who produced the original geographic tube map. Simon’s site is currently under reconstruction in the meantime take a look at other London Underground diagrams.
