Mobile 3D City, the people behind the excellent Paris 3D application on the iPhone have released a movie detailing a 3D City dataset from Blom running on an Ipad:

In many ways the iPad is the perfect device for exploring 3D cities, we spent the weekend playing about with Google Earth on the device and its impressive. Of course the introduction of 3D buildings takes it to a new level…

Yell Releases Online 3D maps of Birmingham, Leeds, London and Manchester

Yell has just introduced new 3D maps of Birmingham, Leeds, London and Manchester, here in the UK. Currently in Beta the service is actually rather impressive, allowing the 3D view to be dragged, titled and merged with more standard street level panoramas.

The ability to view and navigate a photomapped 3D model of London within a web page would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. The viewer is flash based and while the resolution of the models is unstandable low, we are impressed that Yell are first to market with such an offering. The movie below provides more of an insight:

Accordingly to Yell’s press release – more regions will get the 3D treatment as the concept rolls out around the country.

The Attractive City Generator

The ‘Attractive City Generator’ is an an interactive installation by Sofia Georgakopoulou, Edyta Augustynowicz and Setafnie Sixt. It was created as part of the The Master of Advanced Studies in CAAD at ETH in Zurich. The students task was to explore urban design methodologies with the use of parametric programs based on object oriented programing, with their particular area of interest focosed on interactivity in urban planning. The video below is extremely impressive, indeed it raises the bar for student projects:

We featured some other work from the course earlier in the week, detailing a 3D City based on Conway’s Game of Life, with this quality of output compared to other courses we have seen ETH is up there with some of the best.

Ordnance Survey: 3D Cities and Accuracy Never Seen Before

We have a lot of time for the good people down at the Ordnance Survey Research Labs and they have just released an interesting video of some 3D Cities work they are carrying out:

The Telegraph has a good story on this along with a quote from Glen Hart, head of research at Ordnance Survey who states that – “Three-dimensional maps in themselves aren’t new, but what we’ve achieved in Bournemouth is a level of accuracy and detail that’s never been done before,”.

It’ll be interesting to see how this stacks up against Infoterra’s Skape initiative, embedded below:

The Ordnance Survey plan to roll out the rest of the UK over the next 5 years and with Google/Microsoft and various other commercial outfits also scanning our cities these are interesting times.
