We have featured the students work as part of the The Master of Advanced Studies in CAAD at ETH in Zurich quite a lot recently and we are quite fastidious as to what goes on the blog. It goes to show the quality of the output.

The following example by Jakob Przybylo, Min-Chieh Chen and Michele Leidi is a typical – this time creating a city using processing:

Processing City – Sandy City (Trailer) from mjchen on Vimeo.

The clip below provides an insight into the process:

Processing City – Sandy City (HD version) from mjchen on Vimeo.

Being able to create a city in one minute – using their processing application is impressive, it also allows output via .dxf, as such it can be imported into any number of rendering/modelling packages.

No word yet on a wider release, but it would be good to see if this could be made available….

Hammer Chen got in contact this morning regards a video tutorial detailing how to create a cityscape with 3D Max 2010. Is a good movie, we like the link to Google Maps:

Hammer works as a technical director / trainer in Gemhorn Inc, an Autodesk local reseller in Taiwan, you can see the full tutorial via his blog post.

You wait for years for a free building/city generator and then two come along in the space of the week. Yesterday we detailed the Procedural Building Generator for Max and now the Suicidator City Engine (SCE) has been released. Running via a Python script in Blender, the results are as equally impressive:

The script allows you to automatically create a city by adjusting various parameters, such as city size and complexity, rather than creating each building, each street, and each texture manually.

Creating detailed cities and buildings has suddenly got so much easier and indeed free, which can only be a good thing.

Head over to the Suicidator City Engine page for full details.

Infoterra Ltd, is a UK based provider of geographic information products and services. We have worked with them quite a lot over the years and they are one of the leading innovators in the field of commercial photogrammerty. It is therefore of note when they send a press release round regarding a brand new 3D city mapping service launching later this year which it says “will have to be seen to be believed”.

Named Skape, it aims to provide B2B professionals with presentational 3D city and mapping data as well as high accuracy building information of the UK’s major cities, all captured by the company’s own dedicated fleet of aircrafts and sensors.

The movie below provides a first look at Skapes output:

Creating a city is all well and good but it is the fine details that brings a 3D city to life, the first of these is the road network.

Creating a road network in 3D Max is to be honest a tedious process but once they are in place complete with pavements (sidewalks) a basic render can begin to look more city like.

The renders here are from our ‘City Roads Package’ which is now available as a free download for 3ds MAX, courtesy of us here at digital urban. Complete with 38 high resolution textures the pack includes a series of objects that will snap together to create a grid or path layout.

Note as a temporary measure the file has been removed due to issues with the textures, we are working hard to resolve this and a new updated file will go online as soon as possible. For the time being a non texture mapped version is available here (.zip file) – it should still be of use as the roads can be snapped togehter to quickly make a city layout for use in our Greeble City tutorial.

If you do use the package we would love to include a render on the blog so do let us know.
