Google’s Street View is without question the most ambitious panorama projects to date and the movie below provides a glimpse of the raw data captured. As the poster vipersniper32 states – four days, 3,642 GPS data points and one blatant violation of Google’s Terms of Service:

So above is the raw data, if you have time and the patience you can create a timelapse from the actual final product:

The timelapse drives up Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis – its almost tempting to make one ourselves…

<img decoding="async" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ADwvfqkxChw/SPcO80-E2CI/AAAAAAAABz4/qbICCS0niAQ/s400/Seety.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257687528152291362" />
Seety have beat Google somewhat to the table with a pretty comprehensive coverage of central London using street based panoramic imagery.

Navigation is nice, although not quite as smooth as Googles own street view product, the main question we have to ask is why? Its well known that Google is currently driving the streets of Europe capturing imagery and with it bound to be a default layer in a few months you have to ask why anyone else would do it?

London UK street level views, but not from Google from Brian Norman on Vimeo.

Licencing and use of imagery maybe a factor – Seety is being used by Earthware (a company worth watching) in the the latest version of our Earthware Property real estate mapping solution. The movie above demonstrates Seety imagery within the Earthware interface.

However with open use of the Google API we assume that property searches will make copious use of street view as soon as its available and where does that leave Seety (?)

Lots of questions we know…

See http://www.earthware.co.uk/ and http://www.seety.co.uk/ for more info and demos.

We predicted a front page story from one of the UK’s newspapers regarding Google capturing Street View images and sure enough today’s Daily Mail delivers.

The Mail states that Street View will include close-ups of buildings, cars and people. Critics say the site is a ‘burglar’s charter’ that makes it easy for criminals to check out potential victims.

Its actually an interesting article and not surprising since it makes for good copy, although perhaps more interesting are the comments posted in the online version.

You can read the full story via the Daily Mail site.

Our view? They are only photographing the street – which is not illegal – faces will be blurred out and it’ll be a really useful service when it launches. They are also not the first, various firms have been capturing 360 degree panoramic images for local councils for years.

Although of note – a project we helped out with capturing Camden in London was removed due to complaints of peoples houses being viewable on the Internet so interesting times ahead.
