As part of TalesofThings we are tagging the city, putting memories and history onto the streets and allow people to leave their own thoughts and experiences via the free TalesofThings qrcode and iPhone app.

One of our favorite parts of London was around Camden Town and the Bansky Maid stencil which is now sadly long gone due to the short sighted view of the council. However, before it was painted over we captured a 360 x 180 panorama of the site, allowing you to travel back in time and see how the wall looked.

The tag is now stuck to the wall, simply go up to Chalk Farm, scan the tag and see how the wall used to look, complete with a Banksy. You can also scan the tag direct from the image above using the free iPhone TalesofThings app.

You can tag anything and everything and get the app via talesofthings.com

Walking Through Time is a research project developing iPhone and Android apps that architectural historians, conservationists and tourists to swap the Google base map for a historical map – i.e., allowing a user to ‘Walk Through Time’.

The movie clip below provides a neat guide to the concept:

In short, we really like this, the ability to load up a historical map based on your current location opens up all sort of possibilities from historical tours through to viewing the changing layout of the city over time.

The project is funded through a JISC grant and is collaboration between Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) and Edinburgh University (UoE) with development led by Chris Speed and Ian Campbell of ECA with Tim Urwin, EDINA / UoE, Petra Leimlehner, UoE,Peter Pratt, UoE, Karlyn Sutherland, UoE.

The app is currently in prototype form – keep an eye on http://walkingthroughtime.eca.ac.uk/ for more news on a release.

The latest update to Google Earth – Version 5.0 – includes the ability to view historical data according to location. In short it allows you to zoom into and area and view aerial imagery from the past. The short clip below details growth in a suburb of Las Vegas:

Google Earth ‘Historical Imagery’ Timeline from digitalurban on Vimeo.

While the majority of the imagery is currently US based, with some areas back as far as 1950, London can be viewed from 1999 onwards and other parts of the UK from 2001. It does make some interesting comparisons and could prove invaluable for the teaching of urban growth and urban sprawl.

The two images below are a quick example we found of new road and housing construction:

2005

2008Change is obviously not limited to urban areas, it can also be of specific use in explaining changes to our physical geographic environment. The movie below by the United Nations Environmental Programme, highlights the Aral Sea in Central Asia, where irrigation and water diversion has led to a dramatic shrinking of the lake beginning in the 1960s and continuing today.

This is an extremely valuable update to Google Earth and one that will have notable impact in the communication and teaching of both physical and human geography.
