Cities can be considered “flows of information, vehicles and people” (Sheller, 2007) transported along diverse urban networks. In the Flowprint of London below, the city’s extensive bus network is used to sketch an animated portrait of the living city, its wonderful:

LDN Flowprint from Anil Bawa-Cavia on Vimeo.

The system was developed by Anil Bawa-Cavia of CASA, another example of the kind of data that is currently being processed and visualised in the lab. Take a look at URBAGRAM for more insight into the work.

Would you like to join the team at CASA? We have two lecturing posistions currently available, accepting new PhD students and of course our MRes in Advanced Spatial Analysis and Visualisation (ASAV).

Below is the latest update on ‘growing the network’, still in draft form as it needs some additional clips but i think its shaping up, albeit in a slightly eclectic way:

Network Rail, the operator of Britain’s rail infrastructure, has undertaken a study to examine the strategic case for New Lines and help shape the future of our railways.

The key aim of the New Line project is to meet future demands for additional rail capacity from passengers and freight users linking London and Scotland in under two hours. Normally such plans are illustrated with more traditional ‘transport like’ movies, this time however Network Rail have pulled out all the stops and produced an extremely impressive promo:

Sure the movie doesn’t actually communicate any information, but hey we like all the effects thrown in, especially the liquid being spilled. Style over substance? Definitely, but we really like it…

The movie above by Steel Blue LLC details various renditions created at different times of project proposals in the Rincon Hill and Transbay Districts of San Francisco. It comes with a few words of warning:

‘Segments of the video may show potential designs of developments that have been revised, put on hold or terminated. Massing location and heights of potential developments may not reflect future zoning revisions by City Planning. Refinement of our 3D San Francisco and future developments are in progress and we look forward to releasing future media. In the meantime specifics about individual project should be located on their respected official websites.’

That said, it is one of those movies to sit back and watch, it is really well done.

You can see more of Steel Blues output on their Vimeo channel.

Specializing in transportation, architecture and urban design projects embedded below are two movies detailing the proposed California High Speed Rail System.

In all, the 240 acres of undeveloped land in downtown Sacramento are being transformed into a master-planned, mixed-use development that will become a hub for trains, buses and light rail:

The second movie details a conceptual view of how high speed rail would operate inside of San Francisco’s Transbay Terminal. The end of the clip is our favorite illustrating how the area surrounding the terminal would be impacted by the 13 towers currently proposed for sites surrounding the new station:
