MxR Architecture – Mixing Physical and Virtual Models: Augmented Reality

By Architectural Visualisation, Augmented Reality

MxR Architecture from Daniel Belcher on Vimeo.

The movie above details ‘MxR Architecture’ a mix of physical and virtual models together in a single interface.

Using Mixed Reality, virtual models can be superimposed over real models in real-time, allowing the designer/user/client to make changes, simulate sun angles, run agents studies, add components as well as transition to a fully-immersive VR view at any time.

Produced by Daniel Belcher of the Design Machine Group at College of Architecture and Urban Planning. University of Washington. 2008 it is one of the best examples we have seen of using augmented reality to communicate architectural models.

We especially like the bipeds walking around on the table top, basic table top augmented reality can be great for a student project and its not as difficult as it looks – see our previous Tutorial ‘Quick and Easy Augmented Reality from SketchUp/3DMax‘ for full details. Of course to take it to the level seen in the video above takes a lot more time and dedication…

Google Maps for Fine Art: The Kremer Collection and Image Cutter

By google maps, Image Cutter, Kremer Collection

Our Image Cutter Software was made to take giga size images and share them quickly and easily over the web by simply embedding imagery on top of Google Maps.

As such we assumed it would be used by panoramic photographers, architects and perhaps a few geographers. It turns out it has also been used by medical imaging experts and more recently to share and display fine art courtesy of the Kremer Collection.

The movie below provides a quick insight into how the site works:

Image Cutter: Displaying High Resolution Images on top of Google Maps from digitalurban on Vimeo.

The Kremer Collection is owned and managed by the Fondation Aetas Aurea (FAA). The collection comprises 17th century Dutch and Flemish Old Masters. The collection contains 48 paintings and copperplates by Dutch and Flemish masters. Many great figures are represented, including Hendrick ter Brugghen, Gerrit Dou, Frans Hals and Rembrand.

It is really nice to see the software used in ways we had not previously envisaged. You can find out more about Image Cutter and downloaded a copy (its free) from here.

Thanks as ever go to the National Centre for e-Social Science who funded our project.

Bartlett School of Architecture: Unit 13 Second Life

By Architectural Visualisation, Bartlett, Second Life, Unit 13

The video below was produced by UNIT 13, an informal unit of the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. It was organized to explore the capabilities of virtual worlds for architectural practice. Unit 13 is currently operated within Second Life.

It came to our attention after we gave a lecture in the Bartlett yesterday detailing some of our own virtual worlds work and it is indeed impressive. It is refreshing to see the mix of techniques to merge the real with the virtual to create a compelling look at alternative ways to visualise urban space.

Take a look at http://uk.youtube.com/user/archimaxx for more movies, such as The Bartlett digital mirror.

We will be featuring more work from the Bartlett over the coming months as CASA (home of digital urban) is indeed part of the Bartlett School here at University College London.

iPhone Google Earth

By Google Earth, iphone

We are not going to say much about this one as its been covered elsewhere – see Franks Google Earth Blog Review and Ogle Earth’s thoughts, take a look at the YouTube launch video below and if you have an iPhone we recommend go getting the app.

The concept alone was almost unthinkable a few years back, a complete 3D earth on your mobile phone and when seen in action it does deliver. Sure there are not any 3D city models yet but from a purely geographical point of view Google Earth on the iPhone is a milestone in portable visualisation.
