Web 2.0 in Five Minutes

By Neogeography, Web 2.0

Web 2.0, Neogeogrpahy, Crowd Sourcing etc takes up a lot of our thinking at the moment while preparing the forthcoming Digital Urban book.

The movie embedded below is well worth a look, despite being 11 months old in these fast moving times it makes some good points in a simple manner:

Originally from http://mediatedcultures.net the point to grab is that the information world has changed and with it the world of geographic information, collaboration, interaction and with it almost every kind of science.

These are exciting times in science, geographic information and urban visualisation in general. Is the Web 2.0 Information Revolution as important at the Industrial Revolution? – Quite possibly, time will tell…

Prototype Game Preview – Modelling New York

By Cities in Games, prototype

Michael from Metromapper.org sent us in an interesting link to a movie detailing a new game entitled Prototype by Radical Entertainment.

Of note is the 1:1 recreation of New York City with developers taking 22,000 photos to get it right, capturing the city as it was in 2007. The movie below provides both a preview of the game and an interview with the developers:

Capturing a city requires a photographic survey, but once the 22,000 photos are in place it can create a unique archive of the city at the point of creation. Combine this with open game play and its looking like an impressive digital version of New York.

The game is scheduled for release on PC, PS3 and XBox 360 in 2008 – date yet to be confirmed.

Thanks for the info Michael…

Crysis – Importing Architectural Models

By Architectural Visualisation, Crysis, Sandbox

Crysis comes with its own Sandbox allowing 3d models to be quickly and easily imported into the game engine. Its early days but we have a quick and dirty model of the University College Quad, the London Eye and the Greater London Authority building running within the engine.

Developed purely as a proof of concept the movie below provides an insight into how architectural models can be imported and visualised in realtime:

The engines features realtime shadows direct from the geometry – a significant step forward in terms of visualisation. Our previous work has focused on using the Oblivion Engine, although the work above is far from complete it is worth taking a look at the same model in Oblivion:

At the moment we are working on importing a 2km square section of London into Crysis, we should have a movie online in the next couple of days.

Thanks got to Joel at CASA for creating the work flow and import path – of note is the ability to import from SketchUp via 3D Max, allowing potentially any model from the Google 3D Warehouse to be imported, although we assume this would break license restrictions?

If you havent got a copy yet it is well worth buying a copy of Crysis
