Darren is a freelance designer/artist based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, his cityscape composite of New York below has been created as part of a showreel in his bid to gain some freelance visual effects work in the world of fantasy/sci-fi television:

Its nice to feature such projects sometimes rather than the high-end visualisations from established studios.

See Darren’s site http://planetmirth.weebly.com/ for full details…

PixelActive have released a new version of their CityScape software. We are a picky bunch here at digital urban but the demo of CityScape is impressive, especially the ability to import native GIS data, OpenStreetMap and export to AutoDesk. Combine this with Unity and you have a powerful city creation tool, complete with traffic.

Admittedly CityScape is priced for high-end users ($19,000) – but the free demo is a blast and a must download for anyone interested in building cities.

See http://pixelactive3d.com/ for download and more details.

CityScape is an urban modeling tool that allows users to build both custom and real-world environments quickly and easily. The focus of the modeler is on allowing developers to concentrate on design rather than the labor involved in creation.

Of note is its support for Max/Maya via COLLADA opening up the possibility for rapid city building – embeded below is the demo movie we quickly created for use in our talk at the AAG last week on ‘Agents in the City: Modeling and Visualizing Emergent Phenomena’ in association with gisagents.blogspot.com:

The movie above took under 20 minutes to complete, in short – CityScape has got huge potential…
