Second Life – Video of the Build So Far: Urban Bubbles

By Second Life

After the first day of building on our new plot of land, kindly donated by Nature, we have a couple of ‘Step Inside Urban Spheres’. The movie below details the level of immersion achieved through the use of 360×180 panoramas and a viewing platform:

Thoughts and comments as ever are welcome, you can visit the scene directly in Second Life as detailed in our previous post.

A high resolution version of the movie can be downloaded from here (28Mb .wmv).

Second Life – Second Nature Cities: First Build

By Second Life

As an update to our earlier post on Second Nature – Digital Urban, CASA and UCL in Second Life we have our first sample object available to view.

Firstly, as pictured above is a view of the geographic layout of the Central London section of the Underground Network. The map is finally complete and we will upload the high resolution image tomorrow.

Secondly is an ‘Urban Bubble’ of Chicago complete with viewing platform:

Although first steps there is at least now something to see…

Second Nature – Digital Urban, UCL and CASA in Second Life

By Second Life

Nature have kindly donated some land in Second Life for our research, we are now part of the Second Nature Island in Second Life. Aimed at exploring rapid photomodelling in Second Life as well as a means to communicate the growth and diversity of cities the plot of land will feature over the coming weeks a number of movies, 3D models and research examples.

At the moment all that stands on the plot are the obligatory flags:

During our exploration of building and representing city based data in Second Life we will be running a series of tutorials on the blog so if you haven’t visited Second Life yet but are interested in its possibilities then now is a good time to join (its free).

We are based on a ‘sky island’ for the moment while we figure out the size of land required and carry out some experimental building…

Designing Buildings using a Multi-Touch Display

By 3D Modelling, Multi-Touch

Devices based on touch are becoming increasingly common and are currently deemed to usher in a new type of interface. Google Earth is a natural software product to be adapted for multi touch but is 3D architectural modelling? In the YouTube movie below Architect Doug Look from Autodesk Labs experiments with Autodesk’s design software on a Multi-Touch Wall device:

The wall is an input device produced by Perceptive Pixel and invented by researcher and (TED conference luminary) Jeff Han. Autodesk Labs believes multi-touch human-computer interfaces may dramatically change how products, infrastructure, and buildings are designed.

The second movie below illustrates more of the concept and applications behind Perceptive Pixel:

We kind of want one…
