Cities in Games – Midgar Final Fantasy

By Cities in Games

Normally our Cities in Games thread concentrates on real world cities. This post is a slight departure to that rule as the City of Midgar forms part of the Final Fantasy series.

Final Fantasy developed as a role playing game in 1987 by Square Co., Ltd. for the Nintendo Entertainment System. To date there are 28 games in the series and it has become one of the most renowned role playing games on both console and PC.

In 2005 ‘Advent Children’ was released a CGI film directed by Tetsuya Nomura, based on Final Fantasy VII, released in 1997. The CGI is unique in its style and in some way links in with our Steampunk post on architectural visualisation. Central to the film and the Final Fantasy series is the city of Midgar as the fan created movie below illustrates:

Set to the soundtrack ‘Big City Life’ by Mattafixthe movie provides a good illustration of the high production quality and the architectural style of the city.

Thanks go to Atomek for suggesting looking up Midgar…

Tutorial – The 3D London Tube Map from Adobe Acrobat to 3DMax

By 3D London Tube Map, 3D Max, 3D Modelling, London Underground, Tutorial

Rapid visualisation of networks can be carried out by simply converting Adobe Acrobat documents to .dwg format as we detail below with a quick render of the London Tube map:

Modelling of the tube lines was possible using the following workflow:

1) Download a Acrobat formatted 2D map from the London Transport site;

2) Import into Adobe Illustrator;

3) Export as .DWG which preserves the vector line data;

4) Import into 3DMax and converting the line data into 3D Splines.

This provides a quick and easy way to transform a 2D map into 3D. A movie illustrating work in progress is embedded below:

The same technique can be used for the actual geographical location of the London Tube Network:

These are sample images of a file recently retrieved from a lost disk – we will be updating the 3D Map over the coming weeks.

The Geography of Second Life – Mapping the Virtual World

By Mapping Second Life, Second Life

Embedded below is a map of Second Life – you can zoom in and out as well as scroll in a similar manner to Google Maps:

Note – there currently seems to be an error with viewing the map using IE 7 we are working to fix this.

Taking some time to pan and zoom around the map reveals ‘satellite’ writing whereby users have claimed large sections of land and shaded it so it appears on the world map.

This post is a quick sample to test the embedding of Second Life maps into Blogger. We will be covering more on ‘Mapping Second Life’ in the coming weeks to take a look at the unique human and ‘human physical’ geography of the virtual world.
