Tweet-o-Meter adds San Francisco, Barcelona, Tokyo and Oslo to its Data Mine: Urban Tweets per Minute

Due to various emails asking ‘where is xxx’ we have added four more cities to the Tweet-o-Meter which means more data to collect and analyse. Is it true that, New York is the city that never sleeps? Do Londoners send more Tweets than New Yorkians’? Is Oslo a bigger Tweeter than Munich? Is Tokyo into Tweets as much as Barcelona? Has San Francisco calmed down after that
Apple Event?

The Tweet-o-Meter measures the amount of tweets (measured in Tweets per Minute or TPM) received from various locations around the world. The gauges are updated every second giving you a live view of the TPM’s in each location.

Tweet-o-Meter is designed to mine data for later analysis relating to furthering our understanding of social and temporal dynamics for e-Social Science within the Twitter demographic. The system is under development here at CASA as part of a wider survey tool as part of the NeISS project in association with Urban Tick and coded by Steven Gray.

Tube Map – Now with Docklands

We have spent the last couple of hours adding the docklands light railway to our Geographic London Tube Map for use in a paper:

The image is on our Flickr stream should anyone wish to download it – also, if anyone is interested we can render out various resolutions for wallpapers etc.

This is a quick post – just to mention that our animation of the London Underground is now on Vimeo. Next step, if we get time, is to animate it according to the year of construction:

London Tube Lines: Growing the Network

Below is a quick draft movie of our latest work with the London Tube map. The movie was created to test the concept of ‘growing’ the tube lines with the thought of having they grow according to the date of construction in a future version. Various bugs now need to be fixed (Jubilee Line is the wrong colour – oops) and stations have to be tweaked etc but we thought we would put it online for those interested:

The movie above is a draft look at our 3D London Tube Map with the lines laid out according to their geographic location. The movie was made as a test to explore mental ray settings in 3ds Max, total render time was 36 hours.

Back to the Tube: 3D London Underground in Google Maps

We are revisiting this earlier work due to a meeting today with regards creating visualisations of the London Underground. The work started out with the movie below of the traditional tube map. Created direct from a .pdf file via London Transports website it provided a ‘quick and dirty’ flythrough of the map:

We then looked at creating a geographical version with the aim to morph in 3D between the two.

Pictured below is the layout so far using Google Maps ‘without the map’. Aimed at creating a ‘plasticine‘ look to the routes the interactive image below illustrates a work in progress produced so we can easily identify the errors. Double click to zoom in and drag to pan:

There are a few errors here and there but it should only need a few tweaks to be near a complete version which can then be morphed and changed as needs be.

You can also view the ‘Google Maps’ version full screen (recommended).

Thanks go to Simon Clarke who produced the original geographic tube map. Simon’s site is currently under reconstruction in the meantime take a look at other London Underground diagrams.
