Community driven it is similar in many ways to sites such as Digg and Reddit. A while ago we put up a post entitled To Digg or Not to Digg coming to the conclusion that geospatial and architectural posts were not really suited to such services.

BlinkGeo had however changed all that and despite running for little under a month has become one of a favorites places to browse all the happening’s in the geospatial community with topics ranging from Google Earth to ArcScene, GPS and general CAD.

The site has its own community mascot ‘Blink’ pictured right who is now included in the footer of all our posts.

The process is simple, if you like a post on this blog or any other where you see ‘blink’ then click to assign the post a vote. The more community driven votes a post receives the more it exposure it will get.

So although we decided not to digg, we do intend to blink…

A while ago we did a ‘how to‘ on embedding Google My Maps into blog posts using the script service at My Maps Plus. There is now a second option using the beta map generator from TakItWithMe.

The process is simplicity itself, you merely copy your My Maps URL and paste it into the required entry box on the TakItWithMe site. Once entered you are provided with iframe code to embed in any blog post or web site as per below:

Functionality is maintained within the map – see our ‘Audio and Perception of Urban Space’ by clicking on the video camera icon. There is more info on the video and other examples via our main post on Aural Architecture and Ipod Space.

The benefits of theMyMapsPlus route is the inclusion of sidebar from MyMaps which is admittedly preferable, however for simple ease of use TakItWithMe is well worth a look.

Thanks to the Ogle Earth blog where we first picked this up.

A recent trend has been a number of services using Google Maps to track near real-time data. In terms of social networks there is TwitterVision which tracks all the recent Tweets from users – see our series on Twitter for more info.

A more obvious application for real-time mapping are visitors to a site and now that is possible using the service from Statisfied. It is easy to set up, you simple register a user name and then copy a section of code into your sites header – this works in both Blogger, WordPress and general html based sites.

The results are fascinating – it is almost a feature that you can leave running on a second machine and sit back and watch. Our stats are minimal to be honest, although growing slowly, but if you take a look at our real-time site visitors page you will note that it caches the last 5 or so readers, your current location will be the last one displayed:

View your location on our live sites visitors map (click the red cross if you get a register window – this will then take you direct to our map)

Depending on our level of traffic a new visitor should pop up every minute or so.

Visit Statisfied to set up your own real-time stats.

Digital Urban has been running happily for over a year now and i think its far to say its a niche topic examining digital technologies and cities. The site has got some kind reviews and notability from various publications, both in print and digitally, but looking at the site stats it is still firmly in the niche market.

Many blogs will find themselves in the same position and there are a numerous articles online on how to increase traffic and therefore readership. Social networking sites are pointed at by a number of commentators as the way to increase traffic. Digg is one such example which the Wiki defines as

“a community-based popularity website with an emphasis on technology and science articles, recently expanding to a broader range of categories such as politics and entertainment. It combines social bookmarking, blogging, and syndication with a form of non-hierarchical, democratic editorial control”

We have recently taken the plunge and added a ‘Digg It’ button along with various other social bookmarking sites after each post. The button is slightly intrusive but allows Digg users to easily click and recommend the post. However, not all posts are world news worthy or cutting edge, so a number of posts may have ‘0 Diggs’ which looks bad on the front page so maybe Digg buttons are only relevant to larger sites with more traffic?

So the question is to Digg or not to Digg on a blog? We are going to give it a go, after all we have faith that posts such as our series of Tutorials or our Cities in Games section etc are noteworthy or else we wouldn’t be running the blog.

We will be running a series of thoughts and ideas on blogging, from a blog that was rated one of PC Pro Magazines Top 5 Web 2.0 blogs the series will cover our thoughts about blogging and stats – don’t believe all the hype from other sites…

The question is will anyone Digg this post or do you self start and Digg It yourself – now that is a question..

Using a service called ‘Blotter’ it is easy to embed your level of authroity from Technorati into you blog. We are not sure if this is a good idea or not but it does make for a quick and easy reference page so you can log your blogs growth or decline. Blotter is a new service from Dapper that graphs a blog’s popularity over time. The popularity statistics are gathered from Technorati using the Dapper service.

Stats are based on Technorati Ranking over time (start date 05/08/07):

Using a service called ‘Blotter’ it is easy to embed your level of authroity from Technorati into you blog. We are not sure if this is a good idea or not but it does make for a quick and easy reference page so you can log your blogs growth or decline. Blotter is a new service from Dapper that graphs a blog’s popularity over time.
Stats are based on Technorati Ranking over time (start date 05/08/07):
