Seven Dials dates back to 1692 when plans for the area were submitted to Sir Christopher Wren, the then Surveyor-General for London. The area is based around 7 streets cumulating in a star shape around the Sun Dial – thus the name Seven Dials.

The original Sun Dial was designed by the architect and stonemason Edward Pierce. It remained on the site until 1773 when it was demolished to remove a gathering point for undesirables.

In 1984 funding was raised to rebuild the dial signaling the regeneration of the area.

Construction of the Navy Pier, Chicago, begun in 1914 under the direction of architect Charles Sumner Frost. The pier was originally designed a shipping and recreational facility, it is now however a theme park and shopping mall.

The Pier is also however a great place to view both the cities skyline and Lake Michigan. The Lake at 118 miles wide and 307 miles long is one of the five great lakes of America.

The panorama is taken looking out towards the Golden Gate Bridge in the shadow of the Sather Tower on the University of California, Berkeley Campus. Sather Tower is an enduring symbol of UC Berkeley, known as the Campanile, was completed in 1914 and stands 307 feet tall. An elevator ride to the observation platform at the 200 foot level provides visitors with a spectacular view of the entire Bay Area and of the campus.

The Campanile houses a sixty-one bell carillon. The bells weigh from nineteen pounds to 10,500 pounds and are located above the observation platform.

The Campanile is significant to DigitalUrban as it is the landmark that was used for research into photogrammetric modelling at Berkeley. The research that came out led to the development of a number of the software packages that we are now using for Virtual London.

Union Square is in the heart of San Francisco, recently renovated the Square is a good place to hang out, grab a coffee and use the free wifi. Central to the Square is a Corinthian column, a memorial to Admiral Dewey’s victory over the Spanish Navy during the Spanish-American War.

Thanks go to Jared Cosulich, the creator of Community Walk, whom we met with regards using Community Walk in London – more news on that in the coming weeks. Jared kindly provided a tour of the city allowing us to capture a number of panoramas which will be posted some time later this week.
