‘City in the sky’ is a concept about an imaginary tranquil oasis above the mega-developed and polluted city, where one can escape from the everyday noise and stress. It was developed as part of the ‘Megatropolis’ project, which started in London with few companies and artists, invited to create their own visions for the future mega-developed city. The metropolis depicted in the video is New York City because that’s where most of the production happened. While the overall ‘Megatropolis’ project didn’t reach a final stage, the presented concept grew into this architectural utopia.

The idea is neat and came to Mike as soon as he saw a piece called Ephimicropolis by contemporary artist Peter Root. The system is a work in progress and built using Cinder, in our view its a movie worth watching:

Build a 3D city using the rules from Conway’s Game of Life and you’ve got our attention. The movie below details such a 3D city engine based developed in Processing by Jeannette Kuo, Dino Rossi and Dominik Zausinger:

The team seem to come from the The Master of Advanced Studies in CAAD at ETH in Zurich – a one-year postgraduate program with a focus on computer-based architectural design and its automated production. The program examines the use of current information technologies as an augmentation of concepts of architecture.

Very neat…

The ability to view the city over time is core to data exploration and integration within a GIS. It also allows lots of nice visuals to be created and one excellent example is Medieval Dublin – From Vikings to Tudors – an interactive DVD box set that illustrates life in Dublin between 800 and 1540 AD:

The DVD explores a 3D model of the walled city, visiting a Viking house as well as strolling down a medieval street.

For more details see http://www.medievaldublin.ie/index.php

Also, take a look at the Silverlight Deepzoom version in the hunt for something rather more seasonal…

Infoterra Ltd, is a UK based provider of geographic information products and services. We have worked with them quite a lot over the years and they are one of the leading innovators in the field of commercial photogrammerty. It is therefore of note when they send a press release round regarding a brand new 3D city mapping service launching later this year which it says “will have to be seen to be believed”.

Named Skape, it aims to provide B2B professionals with presentational 3D city and mapping data as well as high accuracy building information of the UK’s major cities, all captured by the company’s own dedicated fleet of aircrafts and sensors.

The movie below provides a first look at Skapes output:

The days of grey scale buildings seem to of gone, with Google launching its automated photorealistic cities – see out post on 3D Birmingham – and Infoterra rolling out a similar commercial service it looks like we are entering a new phase of digital cities.

Skape will be launched to the market later this year. To register interest and to receive updates prior to launch, please visit www.skapeworld.com.

See also the Skape Blog for the latest news on the software, views and development.
